How can I find out when a domain becomes available?

A WHOIS lookup shows the domain's registration details, such as its expiry date. If a domain has expired, it may become available for registration after a certain quarantine period.

Does a WHOIS lookup show the owner of every domain?

Not always. For many domain extensions (e.g. .com, .net, .org), owners can hide their details with privacy services.

Why can't I see an individual's details for a .fi domain?

Under Traficom's regulations, individuals' details do not have to be publicly visible in the WHOIS registry. You can still make a data disclosure request to Traficom if you have a legal basis for getting the information.

What information can a WHOIS lookup give about an IP address?

An IP lookup can show the owner of the IP address (usually an internet service provider or an organisation), its geographic location and other technical details. IP address details of individuals are usually not publicly available.

How often is WHOIS data updated?

It depends on the registry and the domain extension. Usually the data is updated within a few hours or days of a change.
